PEARLS is an evidence-based mental health program designed to reduce depressive symptoms and improve the quality of life for older adults:
Through one-on-one counseling sessions, participants:

The program helps to reduce depression in seniors, regaining a sense of purpose and emotional well-being.

Memory Café is a welcoming program for individuals living with dementia or cognitive impairment and their caregivers.

The program fosters connection, dignity, and emotional support for both participants and caregivers.



In addition to direct services, MAFS conducts community-centered health research to identify gaps in care and develop culturally relevant resources for South Asian older adults and caregivers.

Findings informed the development of Benefits Navigation Toolkits and a Community Resource Map in Hindi, designed to support independent, self-paced learning for older adults and caregivers.
With renewed support from the AbbVie Foundation, MAFS continues the Break the Stigma mental health initiative to reduce barriers, increase awareness, and promote emotional wellness within the South Asian community in Lake County.

Through open conversations, myth-busting discussions, and culturally responsive education, the program empowers individuals and families to recognize symptoms of depression, seek help confidently, and prioritize mental well-being without fear or shame.
Since its launch, 145+ community members have participated, with 125 individuals screened and connected to appropriate support when needed.


The SAATH Journey (South Asians Active Together) is a multi-year community health research initiative developed in partnership with Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
Launched in 2019, SAATH explored culturally tailored physical activity and health education approaches among South Asian mothers and adolescent daughters to support heart health and diabetes prevention.
This initiative reflects a collaborative effort among researchers, community partners, and MAFS staff.
