Health/Health Research Program

Since its inception in 1992, Metropolitan Asian Family Services (MAFS) has provided culturally tailored health programs that enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of South Asian communities across Chicagoland.

Delivered by skilled staff and healthcare professionals, these programs reduce health disparities and improve access to care through education, prevention, and community support.

Physical Health Programs

Diabetes Education Workshops

MAFS provides evidence-based diabetes self-management workshops to help seniors better understand and manage their condition.

Workshops focus on:

Blood sugar control

Nutrition and portion planning

Physical activity and lifestyle changes

Goal-setting and confidence-building

Programs are delivered in culturally relevant formats and languages to ensure accessibility and real-life application.

Mental Health Programs

Our programs include community education and stigma-reduction workshops, mental health screenings and referrals, and counseling support in culturally familiar languages, helping individuals and families access compassionate and appropriate care.

PEARLS Program

PEARLS is an evidence-based mental health program designed to reduce depressive symptoms and improve the quality of life for older adults:

Through one-on-one counseling sessions, participants:

Learn problem-solving and coping strategies

Increase physical and social activity

Build emotional resilience and confidence

The program helps to reduce depression in seniors, regaining a sense of purpose and emotional well-being.

Memory Café Program

Memory Café is a welcoming program for individuals living with dementia or cognitive impairment and their caregivers.

Memory games and cognitive activities

Arts, music, and social interaction

Supportive group engagement in a safe environment

The program fosters connection, dignity, and emotional support for both participants and caregivers.

Health Research & Community Studies

In addition to direct services, MAFS conducts community-centered health research to identify gaps in care and develop culturally relevant resources for South Asian older adults and caregivers.

Key Research Initiatives:

ASIAAN (Aging Services Inclusive of Asian American Networks)

Peace of Mind: Dementia Caregiving Research

Research activities included:

Community resource mapping

Service provider interviews and surveys

Pilot testing of culturally tailored learning tools

Findings informed the development of Benefits Navigation Toolkits and a Community Resource Map in Hindi, designed to support independent, self-paced learning for older adults and caregivers.

Break the Stigma – Supported by ABBVIE Foundation

With renewed support from the AbbVie Foundation, MAFS continues the Break the Stigma mental health initiative to reduce barriers, increase awareness, and promote emotional wellness within the South Asian community in Lake County.

Community workshops led by licensed psychiatrists and counselors

Depression screenings (PHQ-9) with referrals for professional care

Culturally tailored resources provided in Hindi and regional languages

Through open conversations, myth-busting discussions, and culturally responsive education, the program empowers individuals and families to recognize symptoms of depression, seek help confidently, and prioritize mental well-being without fear or shame.

Since its launch, 145+ community members have participated, with 125 individuals screened and connected to appropriate support when needed.

SAATH Journey: Community Health Research

The SAATH Journey (South Asians Active Together) is a multi-year community health research initiative developed in partnership with Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

Launched in 2019, SAATH explored culturally tailored physical activity and health education approaches among South Asian mothers and adolescent daughters to support heart health and diabetes prevention.

This initiative reflects a collaborative effort among researchers, community partners, and MAFS staff.

Looking Ahead

MAFS will continue to expand community-driven research partnerships to ensure that data leads to action, strengthening culturally responsive programs that support healthy aging, caregiving, and mental wellness.
