THE SAATH JOURNEY

A Story of Community, Collaboration, and Impact

The SAATH Journey (South Asians Active Together) is a multi-year, community-based health research initiative developed in partnership with Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Launched in August 2019, SAATH examined culturally tailored physical activity and health education strategies to support cardiovascular health and diabetes prevention among South Asian mothers and adolescent daughters.

Rooted in community engagement, SAATH is a collaborative effort among academic researchers, public health professionals, community advisors, and MAFS staff to address health disparities in South Asian communities.

The SAATH Journey

Through group discussions, culturally relevant education, and guided physical activity sessions, SAATH created a supportive environment where mothers and daughters learned together, strengthened family bonds, and engaged in meaningful conversations about health and wellness.

Research Question

Does a culturally adapted, group-based lifestyle intervention improve physical activity outcomes more effectively than standard written health education materials among South Asian American mothers and daughters?

Study Approach

Community-based, culturally adapted physical activity intervention

Group exercise and discussion sessions held virtually and in community settings

Comparison with a control group receiving written health education materials

Designed with input from South Asian community members to ensure cultural relevance

Participants & Locations

Key Findings & Impact

While the intervention did not result in statistically significant increases in physical activity levels compared to the control group, the SAATH study generated important insights into:

Culturally responsive research design

Community trust and engagement

Family-based health education approaches

Adaptation of research methods during the COVID-19 pandemic

Participants reported increased confidence, improved awareness of healthy behaviors, and stronger mother–daughter connections.

Lessons Learned

Culturally tailored, community-based research plays a critical role in reaching underserved populations

Flexibility and adaptability are essential for sustained engagement

Continued research and innovation are needed to strengthen lifestyle interventions for South Asian women and girls

Looking Ahead

Findings from the SAATH Journey continue to inform future health research, education initiatives, and community-centered programs at MAFS, reinforcing our commitment to health equity and culturally grounded care.

A Collaborative Effort

The SAATH Journey represents the collective work of researchers, healthcare professionals, community partners, participants, and MAFS staff who dedicated years of effort to advancing community health.
